The youth are not useless: They are used less

Denhang Bosai

The old Hindi adage ‘Padoge Likhoge Banoge Nawab.’ Kheloge Kudoge Banoge Kharab’ is no longer in vogue and relevant. Today many youth all the world over are seriously taking sports as a career. In fact, the same parents who used to prevent their children from playing games and sports are encouraging them to take sports seriously. This sudden change of mindset in the parents has come about thanks to international sports persons like Sachin Tendulkar, PT Usha, Mary Kom, Sania Mirza, Baichung Bhutia and many others who are earning in millions and are today, youth icons of the country including the small towns and villages. I do not have statistics to show here but I dare say that in Arunachal Pradesh, 40% of the youth are alcoholics, 10% of them are opium and drug addicts, 30% are school drop-outs or villagers having no or little knowledge about sports whatsoever. Now, we are left with only 20% youth whose skills can be honed and sharpened for any competitive sports. It is often frightening to silently witness so many youth going astray aimlessly and un-gainfully in our state. Many budding and promising sports persons have ruined their career by indulging in vices like excessive intake of IMFL, all kinds of drugs and other addictives like cigarette, tobacco etc which not only act as a stumbling block for the sports person but can also potentially kill the users of these deadly substances. Our state government and the Sports Department must work doubly hard and travel the proverbial extra mile to prevent the minuscule 20% youth of the state to shun these vices first before taking up any sports activities. A clear and popular Sports Policy is sine qua non to attract more youth to take up sports as a career. A state or a place where in the youth are not physically and mentally fit can never achieve success in games and sports in this cut-throat world of intense competition. Only the fittest and the most talented can survive in competitive sports. The policy of ‘catch ‘em young’ should be invariably followed. In the well known sporting nations like the USA, Germany, Russia, China, Japan etc, the sporting talents are spotted at an a young age and are imparted rigorous training along with academics. Contrarily, in our country sports was never encouraged in the past. The realization of the great importance of sports dawned quite late in India. However, things are looking up now hopefully that day is not far when India will be counted as one of the serious contenders in the field of sports and games.

If we talk about development of sports or for that matter, realization of the need to give a fillip to sports in the state by the planners and the WHO’S WHO of the state is at a nascent stage. But thanks to some naturally gifted and talented young Arunachalees, our state has at long last found a spot in the sporting map of the country, especially in badminton, weightlifting, mountaineering, arm wrestling, karate, taekwondo etc. Our state government should give more thrust to sports that require endurance like marathon, running, mountaineering, boxing, football, badminton, weightlifting, archery, karate, taekwondo  etc because our youth have inherent strength and the much needed endurance by virtue of having lived on the hilltops where they have to climb. The youth are naturally trained to face hardships. They are also used to high altitude scenario due to which the young mountain climbers are so successful. Incidentally, our Arunachalees are also naturally flexible and agile which is a hallmark of a successful sports person. These agility and flexibility among our youth may be because of the difficult terrains they have to manoeuvre everyday and also because of their adeptness in dancing during the numerous festivals they celebrate. Cricket can be accorded less weight age because it needs huge infrastructure which our government may not be able to provide. Instead of cricket more importance may be given to indoor games. The Wancho youth of Longding district can be roped in to train them in athletics, boxing, weightlifting and mountaineering. They are born athletes and only honing their inherent skills is required. Many Wancho youth are well known boxers and athletes in different army regiments.  More professional and reputed coaches, physiotherapists, dieticians and sports physicians may be employed to look after the needs of the sports persons in order to shape them into truly sports men and women of international standard. Today, all the nations take great pride in producing great sports persons because they bring laurels for their nations in prestigious sports meet like the Olympic. The achievers are given great honour and are made sporting ambassadors. Sadly, achievement of sporting glory by our sports persons in India leaves a lot to be desired. A nation of billions, India gets beaten by non-entity and tiny countries in sports in the international arena. India always seems to find herself languishing at the bottom in every Olympic which is a serious food for thought for all the sports aficionados. We definitely want to see our national tricolor fly high and make us proud and the onerous onus of achieving sporting glory in and other sporting events is on our youth.

There are no two opinions about the fact that youth are a crucial segment of society. They are the basis for future development including sports. The youth are the social actors of change and can serve as a pressure group to lobby governments in defining their priorities. Sports definitely can be one of their top priorities and they should not spare any effort to promote sports in the state. Let us not forget that youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but the partners of today. As always, it is youth’s task to make history in the future and society’s obligation to provide with sufficient resources and an honest basis for hope in carrying out this task. The former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan underlined the role of youth as actors who have real expertise complimentary to that of academic and researchers. It is important to strive towards the involvement of youth as active citizens. Hence, our state government should leave no stone unturned to provide all the requisite facilities to the youth of the state to facilitate sports to flourish in the state. The youth are our future and our future will be safe and secure only if our youth are engaged gainfully to contribute their mite towards building Arunachal Pradesh strong, vibrant and self-reliant. Let our state be known as a sporting state like Manipur which has produced many international sporting icons. If Manipur can do we too can do it. Let’s be optimistic and positive in our approach as the world has no time to listen to the complaints of the weak, the meek and the pessimists.
